There was a visual search engine that was interesting once and not again. I don't even remember it's name.
Of course the latest is Bing (I think it's "Bing"). Yes, I used it, twice I think. Haven't touched it since.
Part of my challenge with search engines is that none of them return immediately relevant data, data that is easily evaluatable by me so that I can make a decision on my next move. After all, I know what I'm really looking for, the search engines never seem to.
And before you think I don't know how to use search engines, maybe you should read some of the items in the links at the end of this post.
The problem is that ... oh, heck. Do you really want me to get all mathematicky on you? I've written about why search engines fail to respond with human valued information many times in many places.
But, all that has changed!
Oddly enough a note about this search engine was buried on my desk for years. I uncovered the note and gave the search engine a try. My first search is always on myself; does the search engine return something immediately useful (to me) and sufficiently actionable information that I can take a logical next step towards my goal?
In a phrase, my god yes!
Both these images contain three working areas. The lower left area shows images where "Joseph Carrabis" and some other person have deeply intersected (here, a mutual admiration for Gordon Lightfoot). The upper left is "topics" although I'd prefer the term "concepts" that are associated with "Joseph Carrabis". Two large central area are two different representations of what Kartoo located intersection wise.
So immediately you get information about and around "Joseph Carrabis", not just blather about "Joseph Carrabis" based on every occurrence of my name anywhere on the internet.
But wait, there's Soooo much more
For me the kicker was this screen, not quite a concept cloud, not a social connectivity matrix, not a ... yet a hybrid that reveals how information about me is distributed and where, how strongly and how often.
These people are good. They're very, very good.
Oh, and if you click on any topic or central area icon?
You go deeper into the concept space, into the connectivity, learning more about the intersection and its elements.
And it's very customizable.
Give it a try. Please. And I don't own any stock and am not affiliated with Kartoo in any way, shape or form (although I'd like to be), nor did I receive any compensation for this post.
I'm just impressed by what they did. Hey, Kartoo...you guys hiring?
