The original, "Here I was, sooting in the Oakland airport, sapping a coffee and wooting for my flight on the first leg of my journey back home," was written Friday, 25 Apr 08 for publication today, Monday, 28 Apr 08, in Lust in Trunslootion Part 1, which will be yesterday by the time this is published on Tuesday, 29 Apr 08.
And if you can get through that, congratulations to you. Pull me aside at some conference and I'll share with you what it indicates about your ability to hold yourself as the center of your universe, no small accomplishment in these information rich times we find ourselves in.
I'm exploring language, what we've lost and gained in our ability to communicate with others of our own species, in this arc. Yesterday's post was about lost verb tenses, specifically the ability to convey transtemporality in modern English language.
Now I'll share something I find fascinating; We've lost these tenses in language, not in understanding. They're lost in cognition but not in consciousness. For example, lots of people could read "Here I was, sooting in the Oakland airport, sapping a coffee and wooting for my flight on the first leg of my journey back home" and understand what I was writing about even if they didn't understand the words I was using. There is a part of the mind's language processing ability that can accept "sooting" is some form of "to sit" when "sooting" is presented with sufficient context as in "...sooting in the Oakland airport, ..."
Even more ancient languages, most of them lost or being lost even as I type this (who knew my typing had such power?) handled transtemporality by "declining" nouns. If you learned grammar in school you might remember being taught how to decline verbs; I am, you are, he/she/it is, we are, you are, they are. Declining verbs comes from a time when individuals or groups -- basically people -- were more important than actions; I am, Not-I am, I-and-Not-I am, Many-I am, Many-Not-I am, Many I-and-Not-I am.
