Scott Fahlman was a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1982 and posted "I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-) Read it sideways." on the blog's ancestor, the electronic bulletin board (oh, for a 300 baud acoustic!).
That was about ten years after I spent a great summer at Carnegie. Once again, too soon. Oh, well...
Scott Fahlman and some others recently started an annual $500 award, The Smiley, for students that work in technology-assisted human-to-human communications.
Hmm...maybe I should send him a copy of my book?
