Armchair Moon Walks
NextStage: Predictive Intelligence, Persuasion Engineering, Interactive Analytics and Behavioral Metrics My explorations of the world around me often take me off planet. I've documented these other worldly excursions in several posts (see the links section below). Most recently I decided I wanted to take some walks on the moon. Guess I'm looking for cheap real estate to develop.

apollo15.jpgWhat I did was look through other folks' home movies of their travels...kind of. The Apollo Image Archive is a collection of images from NASA's Lunar missions close to forty years ago. The image here is one example of those you can find there.

From the site's homepage

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced an ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the Moon before the end of the decade. NASA answered the challenge in 1969 with the successful landing of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module (LM). To record their historic voyages and collect scientific observations many thousands of photographs were acquired with handheld and automated cameras during all the Apollo missions. After returning to Earth, the film was developed and stored at Johnson Space Center (JSC), where they still reside. Due to the historical significance of the original flight films, typically only duplicate (2nd or 3rd generation) film products are currently available for study and used to make prints.
Just imagine what pictures we'd have if the Apollo astronauts had cellphones with built in video and imaging technology?

Very recently I learned that there are plans to place an observatory on the dark side of the moon. No, not to shield it from the sun...the dark side of the moon (and with all due apologies to Pink Floyd) is the side of the moon we never see due to orbital and rotational velocities. The dark side of the moon gets its share of sunlight. What it doesn't get is all the radio interference from the earth.

But if the observatory is on the dark side of the moon, how will they get its images to us?

I'm guessing they'll use cell phones.
