It’s the small things in a company that can make a difference. A company I was doing research at instituted a Lending Library. The idea started as a repository for books that other employees no longer wanted. The concept has grown into a place for DVD’s, CD’s, VCR tapes and other items that people wanted to share with other employees or just get rid of. The library has grown from just a few books to thirty, with over 50 DVD’s and VCR tapes. It seems that the collection grows every Monday. People stop by to see what’s been donated or returned.
It’s a win-win scenario. The giver benefits by having a place to get rid of those books and DVD’s that the relatives thought they’d love, or those mistakes that were picked up in the bargain bin. We all have a few of those hiding somewhere. The other employees benefit by seeing a movie for free. It’s all done on the honor system, no one’s keeping track of who takes what and when or if the item is actually returned. Many people have been able to see movies and read books that they thought they would love and afterwards are really glad that they didn’t spend the money on the movie or book. The opposite happens as well. People are introduced to new authors that they wouldn’t normally read or see movies that they would have passed on otherwise.
Try it at your company, You’d be surprised at the diversity of items that are donated.
