I brought some kites out to last week's Emetrics Summit and we flew them down on the waterfront. Everybody had a good time. The specific kites we were flying were the Q2002, Stylus and WinDancer. I brought a few more but there wasn't enough time to fly them all. The flyers included Jim Sterne, Stephane Hamel, Andrea Hadley, June Dershewitz and myself.
What follows are some pix taken by Jim Sterne. The full set is up on the Pictou County Flyers site's Emetrics Summit SF 2007 page.
This first image is of Jim Sterne at the controls of the Stylus. I tend to start people out flying a Stylus because it's a very forgiving kite, has no struts and is pretty indestructible. The Stylus' indestructibility was pretty well proven by June Dershewitz.
June was in the market for a new car and figured snagging one with the Stylus would be a good Kite vs Car test. As I wrote above, the Stylus has no struts so, even when it comes crashing down on somebody, the most that'll happen is that they'll get enveloped in a thin fabric. I was laughing hard during this. No one was safe from being kited, least of all me (I was launching the kites most of the time), and Jim Sterne made some great short videos of our antics.
This next picture is of Stephane Hamel at the controls of the Q2002 kite. One of the videos mentioned above shows Stephane using the Q2002 to attack the Stylus and knock it out of the sky. Pretty good for a first time flyer. We've made plans to get together in Quebec City and do some flying on the Plains of Abraham. I'm looking forward to it!
This last picture is of June Dershewitz, Stephane Hamel and Andrea Hadley holding up the WAA logo.
Yes, I enjoy kite flying and more enjoy sharing the sky with others. A friend of mine once spent an afternoon flying kites with me. I started him on the Stylus and then worked him up to the SkyTiger. Anyway, I noticed that my friend was spending as much time observing me flying as he was learning to fly. He said, "I think I'm beginning to understand you, Joseph."
No wonder.
Jim called this the "First Annual Emetrics Summit Kite Fly" and I'm looking forward to others. Here's to catching some big sky the next time! - Joseph
