For readers who follow all my arcs and threads, yes, I'm aware of the irony of working with highly talented UMass Lowell students about to enter the job market while sharing Sweetness' research on online job applications and job hunting online.
Part 1 had the story of FG, one of Sweetness' research subjects. Part 2 dealt with a qualified candidate dealing with a company that had some incredible expectations and part 3 dealt with misleading job postings. Part 4 began the discussion of job boards and Part 5 broadened the discussion to include filling out online job applications.
Now Sweetness writes about what's missing in the online process.
"The other mystery that the interviewees wanted answered was a whether a human actually saw the resume and cover letter that they sent.
"PD sent his resume off and, lucky for him there was contact information available. He decided to call and see if the person had received his resume, and could he discuss his skills and the position with the HR person. He was told that the person he sent his resume to was no longer with the company and that this new person hadn’t received it.
"It’s a good thing PD called, or could call, and find this out. He immediately resent his resume to this new person and was able to discuss his skills with the HR person.
"All of the people interviewed remarked that most of the blog posting that they had read focused on what to do to “nail” those interviews they were getting. The advice given by the various bloggers was great on that topic. The interviewees felt that the bloggers missed one thing though. How do you get an interview? Some of those I interviewed had sent out 80 or more resumes and not a bite. You may say that their cover letter or resume wasn’t up to par. Maybe, however that brought up a few other points the interviewees all had in run into."
