Sweetness' Research on Job Hunting, Part 5
NextStage: Predictive Intelligence, Persuasion Engineering, Interactive Analytics and Behavioral Metrics We continue with part 5 in Sweetness' arc on how job hunting has changed in the internet age. Sweetness is available for presentations on the topics of job hunting online and resume submission.

Part 1 had the story of FG, one of Sweetness' research subjects. Part 2 dealt with a qualified candidate dealing with a company that had some incredible expectations and part 3 dealt with misleading job postings. Part 4 began the discussion of job boards. Here Sweetness talks about filling out online job applications.

The experience that BJ had is similar to other experiences that many people have had. There’s a job posted on a job site, the link is clicked, and it either brings you to another position entirely or the company’s home page, where you need to fill out the application and the web site knows nothing about this position.

The subject of filling out the online applications brought a lot of response from interviewees. Many company web sites have applicants fill out questions about job relevancy, in addition to cover letters and resumes. This is fine. However, one applicant, after doing all of the above and 15 questions into the questionnaire found out that the job required 60% travel. Nowhere was this indicated. The job board for the position didn’t list it; in fact the amount of travel required was not indicated even though there was a place for the information. I don’t know about you but if a position requires that much travel it should be put in the job requirements in the description so people can see it before they apply.

I mentioned in Sweetness' Research on Job Hunting, Part 2 some of my experiences job hunting years ago. Reading through Sweetness' findings, I'm not really sure things have changed all that much simply because people can submit their resumes online. Just about everyone Sweetness interviewed mentioned emailing their resume or submitting their resume online, calling up to make sure it was received and learning that their resume either wasn't received or that the email address was no longer valid.

Ouch!
