Site Development Lags Expectations, Part 3
NextStage: Predictive Intelligence, Persuasion Engineering, Interactive Analytics and Behavioral Metrics Regular reader Susan Prager spawned this arc when she sent me Site Development Lags Expectations with the note, "Just came across this- thought of you and meeting the expectations of the web audience..."

I share in part 1 of this arc that I'm not shocked by the information in the article and asked "Why is expectation so low?". I'm suggesting answers from Reading Virtual Minds, Chapter 6, "Expectation versus Satisfaction". One of those answers is based on observing people browsing websites demonstrate minute anxiety responses even though they're in an (assumedly) safe environment.

Part 2 offered that unmet expectations is the reason for the anxiety. Here we get into how people respond to new forms of information.

And this is a book about how people are changing their behaviors to respond to new forms of information, so let me ask, do you really expect a great web experience when you're browsing? When you read a PDF file on screen? Have you gotten to the point in your business or personal email where you have to apologize to someone because their email got stopped by your spam filter so you didn't know you were supposed to do whatever it is you're apologizing about?

Pick a site, any site, even a site that you're familiar with and browse regularly, something you already have bookmarked; The question becomes "Is going to that site something you consider during your other daily activities?" With an opt-in email newsletter or list-server, will you be talking about what you read or saw the next day? Will you even remember it in the next five minutes

Let's put those questions into context. There are people who will take time out of their day to contact their significant other for no reason other than to say hello, exchange some gossip, so on and so forth. There is nothing objectively crucial to their day which requires this activity and subjectively their day isn't complete without it. Likewise there are people who can't wait to get back to a book they're reading.

Next up, the difference between expectation and satisfaction.

Please contact NextStage for information regarding presentations and trainings on this and other topics.
