In any case, here's the summary of my response to his post and a bibliography for interested readers.
"Hello and thank you for your interest in my work. I'm happy to share what we do and will admit to being dense when it comes to some things. Case in point, I'm not sure what you're asking so please forgive my asking for clarification.
"Are you asking for the mathematics? I've provided a link to a for-pay whitepaper that details it somewhat.
"Are you asking what is measured? I mention in Defining Attention on Websites & Blogs that we measure things like focused cognition, intentional awareness and other factors.
"Time-on-task is not a valid factor of attention in any case. Example - you've just cut your finger. Your attention is really on getting a band-aid but for a very short period of time (one hopes). However, for that short period of time your attention is really focused on getting that band-aid. I've also put together a bibliography which I'll be putting on my blog around 2pmET today. The reports you mention in your post can be developed by URL, by time of day, by location, by page, by gender, ...
"Clients use this information (both specific to their site(s) and their vertical) to figure out where new markets exist (as the Emetrics Summit folks are doing), for planning new product offerings and for learning what their clients are really interested in. Examples from amalgams of sites in our current inventory can be seen on our Level of Interest Reports page. We don't update this page every day, FYI.
"Please let me know if I haven't answered your question correctly and I'll do my best to go at it again. Thanks - Joseph
