Corresponding with Sommur, Part 1
NextStage: Predictive Intelligence, Persuasion Engineering, Interactive Analytics and Behavioral Metrics The IMediaConnection reader, Sommur who I introduced and didn't name in More from IMedia Connection Readers continues to send me interesting information. This exchange went as follows:
"You are a lot like me in that you are interested in lots of areas. And that is one reason why I emailed you. I think seeing the bigger picture is always the more interesting way to view the world.
"I have been online looking at web sites of web designers, and I am running across a real mixed bag.
"Some of the seasoned people have sites that are hard to understand, sort of secretive, and "just email us and we will put together a package of our work, in an area that you are interested in for your viewing......."
"On the gender marketing, it is just refreshing to hear it from a man, how capable women are etc.
"We are!
"And we multitask so well!!
"haha..."

This reader, Sommur, continues: 'But Fitzsimons said the results "suggest that reactance to significant others is so automatic that I can't possibly be expected to control it if I don't even know it's happening."
'This is one of those things which, if I saw it in a movie, I'd laugh. It's happening in real life, though, and this is where humor becomes pathos. Here's why...'

Sommur continues:
"'Taking a class with Carrabis is rather like having the top of your skull surgically removed, turned around backwards and reattached. It's like trying to tell someone all the things you always believed were true, then finding those things sound silly even to you.'
"This is interesting because I am just completing my project exam in a course called Open Thinking, TRU-OL distance ed. It opened me up to how I think, process, and make decisions. Got me to journal, mind map, and become visually creative again. Analyze and interpret desires and act now on goals that I thought were in the future.
"Hummm ... long story shortened ... I read somewhere that all men are slightly autistic. Autistic in that they tend to have a single minded focus on what ever it is that they are working on at a particular time. At first I laughed about it, but then I gave it more thought and I could really relate to it. The way that I think has always seemed so different, big picture and all of that good stuff.
"So I think this man was being honest when he said he just automatically tuned people around him out. Because he does.
"The trick is to learn not to. And that takes some effort. But I know it is possible, because of this course that I am in.
"The real question might be, Is he motivated enough to want to change the way that he thinks? Are there enough rewards in society for him to really do it? Might not be. Male domination and all of that."

Many thanks, Sommur, for your thoughts. I'll share my response to Sommur tomorrow at this time.

Please contact NextStage for information regarding presentations and trainings on this and other topics. I'll be speaking at the San Francisco April '07 Emetrics Summit on Quantifying and Optimizing the Human Side of Online Marketing on May 7, 2007. Come on by and say hello.
