The Banker's Tale..., finale.
They did have some nice things you could buy. A fleece pullover was $80 fish dollars. You can imagine what happened. Most of the rewards were out of reach of the employees. They had weekly fish meeting to discuss how things were going in each branch. The participation in these meetings was mandatory, not volunteer. The playing in the branches was non-existent. Every idea the employees had for play was shot down by management. They usually said that the idea wouldn’t bring in customers so it wasn’t allowed. Remember, their focus was on happy customers, not happy employees. As a result they had so much fish stuff left in the store that they shut the down the Fish Store and started discounting the merchandise. Anybody need a candle holder or another can sleeve with the bank's name on it? I’m not sure where the fish stuff finally ended up.
I was in management at this bank and would often cover at the various branches when they were short staffed. Every branch I worked at hated the fish idea. There was already pressure on the tellers for referrals, security, balance your drawer etc. They didn’t need this and it certainly wasn’t making the employees or customers happy. Some branches got in to it more than others. They had Beta fish in tanks, with naming contests. Decorations were fishy in nature. The only play with the customers was answering their questions about why all of the fish stuff. Even they didn’t get it.
The philosophy died about a year after it began. Upper management is still probably scratching their heads, not understanding why it failed.
