In case you didn't know, I'm an information junky. Some people are news junkies, I don't like to limit myself. Yesterday I saw something on two different news shows that truly impressed me. You've probably seen it by now as I don't know a news show that wouldn't
feature it (okay, probably the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer might not have shown it). It's the deer stuck on the ice being rescued by a helicopter.
The reason this so impressed me is because it is (to me) a true example of thinking outside the box. I've flown in helicopters and flown one once and appreciate the skill a helicopter impresario must have in order to
- use the backwash from the rotor...
- to push a deer off the ice and unto the land...
- without sending the deer toppling...
- as if a gentle hand were guiding it in one direction.
Maybe this is something they teach in helicopter pilot school, I don't know, but to this non-initiate it was danged impressive and my hat's off to the pilot. Part of my income is from developing out of the box solutions to what people consider intractable problems so you might say I know one when I see one. This one was beautiful.
